ALTA COMMUNITY FLAG

ALTA COMMUNITY FLAG

WHY A FLAG FOR OUR COMMUNITY?

While Alta has many logos, this flag will represent our whole town and culture. It will help create a sense of identity in Alta, enhance community personality and inspire pride. It will become a recognizable symbol that shows our uniqueness. This program is funded by Alta Chamber & Visitors Bureau and hosted and administered by Alta Community Enrichment.

FLAG HISTORY

The flag artwork symbolizes essential aspects of Alta, draws inspiration from, or derives context from the landscape, flora, fauna, or community of Alta, and provides joy. The flag artwork follows the design principles from Good Flag Bad Flag. The design principles are: simple, meaningful, 2 to 3 colors, no lettering or seals, and be distinctive.

A flag committee narrowed down submitted artwork created by a design firm to four flag designs, ACE brought the final decision to the community. We wanted this flag to be chosen and loved by the people.

FUN FLAG INFORMATION

If you feel flags are a silly thing of the past, interestingly enough, they are a trending project for many locations. Salt Lake City recently hosted a call for submissions for their city flag, and the State of Utah is currently redoing theirs! Some other flag programs that are of great interest:

FUTURE CREATIVE PLACEMAKING IN ALTA

ACE will base future public art initiatives and creative placemaking endeavors in Alta on the final art chosen for the flag. We aim to keep a clean, cohesive feeling with all our projects that occur publicly in town.

About the designer:

Britt Johnston, BigLife and PUNCH Magazine’s Creative director of all things art, owner of Nimbus Creative Group, specializes in logo and brand design for the outdoor industry, including the brand and logo designs for Ruffwear, Terry Bikes, ACE, and Alta Environmental Center. A Gig Harbor, Washington, native, Britt moved to Sun Valley, Idaho, when she was but a wee-little girl gone wild. A former river guide and ski patroller, Britt now spends her time deciphering the Star Wars code passing between her husband, Big John (former Alta Ski Patroller ), and 12-year-old son, Hoken Oly. Never caught without a big smile on her face, a cackle in her belly, and a bottle of wine in her fridge at-the-ready, Britt keeps things interesting.
