paper marbling and bookmaking

Participants will explore traditional and contemporary bookmaking techniques by creating a handmade pamphlet-style book. Students will begin by learning the fundamentals of paper marbling using Japanese marbling inks to create unique covers on watercolor paper. They will then assemble interior pages into signatures, learn basic folding and hole-punching techniques, and sew their pages into a finished bound book. The workshop combines printmaking, craft, and narrative structure.

Rebecca Pletsch is a painter and multidisciplinary artist whose practice spans mixed media, collage, alternative photographic processes, and experimental printmaking. Her work explores memory, place, and the passage of time through layered imagery and material investigation. Pletsch has exhibited throughout Utah at major institutions including the Southern Utah Museum of Art, Utah Museum of Contemporary Art, Ogden Contemporary Arts, Springville Museum of Art, and the Kimball Art Center. She is the recipient of numerous awards and honors, including a 2026 Utah Artist Fellowship from the Utah Division of Arts & Museums. Through her studio practice, public art projects, and teaching, Pletsch continues to engage audiences with work that bridges contemporary art, photography, and traditional painting.
