not your grandma’s tie dye
Thursday, August 6th | 6PM | Alta Peruvian Lawn | $10 | Sign-up Required
Give an old t-shirt or two new life! In this hands-on class, you'll learn the basics of how to tie dye black or dark-colored clothing. You'll learn to tie your shirts into various patterns, then use bleach to lighten the fabric to prepare it for dye. You'll learn how to prevent the bleach from putting holes in your clothing, and then use professional-grade dyes to create your own custom color palette. You'll leave with speciality detergent and instructions to thoroughly wash your tie dye at home.
Note: Using bleach to remove color is optional! You can bring white or light-colored items to this class.
IMPORTANT: Please bring your own clothing to dye! Please limit yourself to 3 small items, like t-shirts or shorts, OR 1 large item, like a sweatshirt.
MOST IMPORTANT: Items MUST be 100% cotton for best results. 80% cotton will work, but is less ideal. We do not recommend bringing clothing items that are less than 70% cotton. If you are unsure about an item, we recommend bringing something else.
For color removal, the brand Comfort Colors is NOT recommended!
The Trash Pile offers sustainably sourced, one-of-a-kind tie-dye. Each item is carefully selected at a local thrift store and is then thoughtfully tied and dyed by hand into a wearable work of art. Since launching in 2021, The Trash Pile has diverted more than 5,000 pieces of clothing from landfills. What began as a pandemic hobby is now a growing movement to save the planet, one t-shirt at a time.
