intro to afro-brazilian capoeria

Thursday, August 29th | 6 PM | GMD Patio - no sign up required

In this class, students will learn the basic movements of capoeira, the vibrant Afro-Brazilian art form that incorporates fluid kicks, ground movements, and music. Students will also learn a little about the history and culture behind this unique art form, and the current work of ACE Artist in Residence, Mestre Jamaika. This class is especially good for people who are interested in dance, culture, martial arts, or fitness. At the end of the class, you will leave with a smile on your face and with a greater appreciation for culturally diverse forms of movement. Please come in comfortable clothing, ready to move. Ages 8 and up are welcome.

Mestre Jamaika (Mauro Romualdo) is an internationally recognized practitioner of the Afro-Brazilian art form of capoeira, and has engaged and positively impacted students and audiences of all ages and backgrounds for over 30 years. Born in the heart of capoeira’s birthplace and his Afro-Brazilian ancestral land, he’s passionate about honoring his ancestor’s and capoeira’s roots by sharing his culture and strengthening the community through his work.

ACE aims to create an inclusive and accessible environment for all of our attendees; please contact our Executive Director, Sara Gibbs, with any questions regarding accessibility.
