how to make artisan sourdough at home

Thursday, August 15th | 6 PM | Brighton House | $5 | Sign-up Required

In this class, students will learn how to make sourdough bread at home using only 4 ingredients, flour, water, salt, and their sourdough starter. Students will learn every step of the process. Baking sourdough bread traditionally is at least a 2-day process, but students will get to handle dough at every stage of fermentation and condense the process into about 90 minutes. This class is for anyone who would like to make their bread at home, no previous baking experience is necessary at all. Students will learn how to use basic baking tools including a bench knife, a banneton, a lame, and a dutch oven as we mix, shape, and bake delicious, organic sourdough bread together. Students will also leave the class with some freshly fed sourdough starter to take home and use to make their bread at home.

Austin Heywood is from West Virginia and he grew up in a house where they only ever ate store-bought white bread. For some reason, he thought making bread was complicated and difficult. Then in 2018 after watching a 'Bread Week' episode of the Great British Baking Show, Austin realized bread can be very simple, and he started baking it at home. After a friend gifted him a book on sourdough, he never looked back. In late 2018, Austin founded his microbakery, House of Bread SLC and since then he has shared hundreds of loaves with people in my community and taught several classes on how to make delicious healthy sourdough at home.
