suminagashi: japanese paper marbling

Tuesday, January 21st | 6 PM | Our Lady of the Snows | $5 | Sign-up Required

Join artist, Lana Neilson for a fun evening of beginner Suminagashi: Japanese Paper Marbling!

Suminagashi in Japanese means "ink floating." We will marble paper by applying ink to the surface of water. As the ink floats and swirls forming mesmerizing patterns like those found in nature, paper is placed on the water's surface imprinting the ink to the paper.

We will learn about the ancient art of Suminagashi and the inks and papers we will be working with. You will leave with your own unique collection of marbled papers made with sumi ink and water collected from Alta! Students are also welcome to bring a 1/2 cup of their own water collected from one of their favorite places in nature such as a lake, river or spring.

Lana Neilson is a visual artist who creates nature-based art. She started working with the ancient practice of Suminagashi to give the water a “speaking presence” within the work - a visual moment of conversation between herself and the water. Her prints are made with Sumi ink and water collected from
the Great Salt Lake, rivers, springs, wetlands, creeks and even seas that she is drawn to. The prints are a celebration of the life-giving waters that shape our lives and the ecosystems we live in.
