ACE has proudly been a tenant of Our Lady of the Snows Center since the early 1990s, and many of ACE’s former board members and community supporters were instrumental in raising funds for its construction for use as both a chapel and a community gathering place. ACE currently hosts 175 events per year to benefit the Alta community, 100 of which are held at Our Lady of the Snows. ACE has been the primary tenant and loving caretaker of the building for many years.
In December 2024, the Catholic Diocese of Salt Lake City, which owns and operates the center, announced its intention to divest from the property. In January 2025, ACE secured funding to purchase the building and received verbal support to do so from the Town of Alta.
ACE indicated our intent to bid on February 12th at the Town Council meeting and submitted our bid to purchase Our Lady of the Snows on February 18th.
However, things took a turn after we announced our intentions. The town has held three closed-door meetings, has had two meetings with the diocese, but still communicated to the public at both the March and April Town Council meetings that “no decisions have been made”.
ACE learned on April 9th from the diocese that the Town of Alta had submitted a Letter of Intent to purchase the building.
On April 11th, the Town of Alta posted a letter informing the public of their true intentions over the past two months. While consideration of such an impactful and financially heavy decision are considered legal without public notice and meetings - the question is, should they be? ACE is thankful to see in writing “the Town remains committed to supporting ACE’s mission and ensuring its continued success within the community” and look forward to our programming to go on without any changes.
Our Lady of the Snows has become a sanctuary for many, fostering a strong community connection through events, movies, yoga, and more. It is your home as much as it has been ACE’s.
