watercolor on wood: hand-painted ornaments

Tuesday, December 12th | 6 PM | Our Lady of the Snows | $5 | Sign-up

In this class, students will use watercolor paints to create simple yet beautiful snowy mountains on wood slices prepped with watercolor ground. Students will learn basic watercolor techniques such as wet-on-wet and wet-on-dry techniques, glazing, and how painting on watercolor grounds differs from traditional paper. This is an excellent class for both beginner and experienced painters alike. Students will leave class with 1-2 ornaments they have crafted for their enjoyment or to use as gifts.

Kristen has been doing art since she was a small child, and it was one of the most significant sources of joy in her life when she was growing up in the Southeast. As crucial as art was to Kristen, life got crazy, and she almost “gave up” on art for several years while she was in college, thinking that her professional life in healthcare didn’t hold room for creativity. It wasn’t until Covid when Kristen was a new grad working in healthcare during a pandemic and desperately needed creative outlets and coping that she decided to pick it up again. She is so thankful she did because it saved her from the world's despair in so many ways. Kristen grew up mainly doing pen and ink illustrations, but in 2020, she gave herself the challenge of learning watercolor fell in love with the medium, and never looked back. Besides her role as an artist, I am also an avid hiker, climber, and skier and use her art as a way to explore the places she loves and travels in. Kristen aims to create art that captures the wonder of these places that we all feel collectively when we visit them and to honor and protect the West.
